NSW: Authorities not alerted to suspect leprosy case: union

The maritime union is concerned about the health and safety of Australian waterfront
workers .. after a crew member from a foreign ship was quarantined with a suspected case
of leprosy.

The foreign vessel arrived recently at Port Kembla and the man was admitted to Wollongong
Hospital on April 2.

A hospital spokeswoman says definitive results aren't expected until later in the week
.. but preliminary tests show the man had a suspected case of leprosy.

Leprosy is a bacterial infection that results in skin lesions .. the most noticeable symptom.
