QLD: GST could send many tourists elsewhere ITOA

A tourism chief is warning that a 10 per cent GST could prompt potential visitors to
Australia to look for cheaper holiday destinations.

PETER DOGGETT of the Inbound Tourism Organisation of Australia has told a Senate Inquiry
that imposing a GST on tourism would translate into huge job losses and a sharp downturn in
foreign exchange earnings.

Mr DOGGETT says Australia faces huge competition from cheaper countries because it is an
end-of-the-line and minor destination in world terms.
